Energy Credit Union is now accepting applications from high school seniors and college students for our 10th Annual Scholarship Program. We will award six scholarships of $1,500 each to six current college students and graduating high school or vocational school students who will attend a two to four year accredited college, university, vocational, technical, or business school. Application forms accompanied the April newsletter. Fill out the form and submit it by June 16, 2008. A random drawing of all applicants will be held at the meeting of the Board of Directors on June 17, 2008. Be sure to read the full description and eligibility requirements. Economic Stimulus Payments
The U.S. Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households in May. To receive a payment, you must have filed a 2007 federal tax return and have $3,000 of income and a valid Social Security number. The IRS will take care of the rest! Eligible taxpayers will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. Any retirees, disabled veterans, and low-wage earners who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive a stimulus payment. Also, be aware that several e-mail and telephone scams involving the rebate payments have already begun! Beware of scams involving proposed advance payment checks. The goal of any scam, whether it be over the phone or by e-mail, is to trick you into revealing personal and financial information, such as your Social Security, bank account, and credit card numbers. Don’t put your finances at risk by falling for these scams. Among the current scams identified by the IRS are the rebate phone call, refund e-mail, audit e-mail, changes to tax law e-mail, and paper check phone call.
